Lake Lure: Top 10 Things to Do

Beautiful Lake Lure. Photo credit: carolinaliving.com

Lake Lure, North Carolina is a great small town that offers outdoor recreation, relaxation, and can be an inexpensive, enjoyable getaway for couples and families. My family has been visiting now for the last 10 years, and these are my TOP 10 FAVORITE THINGS TO DO here.

1. Rent a Cabin

Lake Lure offers every type of accommodation you could ever ask for, but I suggest renting a cabin. Head over to homeaway.com to check out the variety of cabin rentals available. You'll find everything from luxury mountaintop homes to lakeside retreats to small one bedroom cabins on the lake. Most cabins come complete with screened porches, hot tubs, full size kitchens, and extras to make you feel right at home. There are price ranges to fit any budget as well. If you only need a small cabin and want to be close to everything, check out Pine Gables Cabins for a perfect fit right on the lake. http://www.lake-lure.com/pinegables.htm

Canoeing the lake was free with our cabin rental.

2. Get on the Water!

This small mountain lake is so beautiful, you must get on it in some way to really appreciate the beauty of this place. Most lake-side cabins come with canoes and kayaks, but you can also rent a boat to enjoy an afternoon exploring.

I suggest lakelureboatrentals.com for pontoon boats, and if you don't want to drive contact lakeluretours.com for a guided tour. Remember, the lake is small so if it is not summer and you aren't getting in, this might be a half-day activity for you.

3. Go to Chimney Rock State Park

You can easily spend an entire day here and not see it all, but you must go! With 7 trails, a butterfly garden, rock climbing, and an Animal Discovery Den for children, there is plenty to keep you and your family busy. I suggest climbing the Chimney Rock Trail where at the top you can enjoy spectacular views of the area and of course, the lake. There is an admission fee, but it is well worth the price. Check out all there is to do here at www.chimneyrockpark.com

4. Hike for Free

There are so many trails in and around Lake Lure that are free. My personal favorite is Little Bradley Falls in nearby Saluda. You can pack a picnic lunch and spend a good day hiking, lounging, and enjoying the falls. This is also a pet-friendly hike, so bring your dog for a day of splashing and climbing with you! Address is Little Bradley Trail Saluda, NC 28773.

5. Lake Lure Beach

Open from Memorial weekend to Labor Day weekend, this beach has water slides, water games, beach volleyball, and picnic tables for families to enjoy the water. If it is the off season, you can enjoy a walk along the boardwalk, rest in the beautiful gazebo, and take in the beauty of the landscaped grounds. This is also a great spot for picture taking and dog walking, biking, and even yoga. For more information visit townoflakelure.com.

6. Rumbling Bald Resort Golfing

If you are a golfer, or have one in your family, visit Rumbling Bald Resort for a round of golf in the shadows of Bald Mountain. For the non-golfers in your group, this resort offers a great spa, tennis courts, putt-putt golf, sno-cones, swimming pools, a few restaurants, and a marina. Avid golfers and their families might want to consider booking a cabin or a condo right here in the resort to enjoy all of the amenities. For more information contact rumblingbald.com

7. Irongate Spa

If golf resorts aren't your thing, but having a beauty treatment or massage is, you will not be disappointed at the Irongate Spa. Located at the 1927 Lake Lure Inn & Spa, Irongate offers the true spa experience complete with the smells, sounds, and ambiance that a spa should have. We enjoyed an 80 minute hot stone couples massage for a reasonable price and left feeling very relaxed. Check out their spa menu at irongatespa.com

Charming gate at The Flowering Bridge.

8. The Flowering Bridge

The Flowering Bridge is on the original bridge that carried travelers across the lake where 3 highways join. When the decision to build a brand new bridge was made, advocates developed the concept of planting a walking garden there for people to enjoy.

Free to the public, people can enjoy walking through gardens of flowers, gazebos, climbing roses, and learn about all types of plants at their leisure. It is a beautiful walk, and a great way to spend 30-45 minutes. For more information visit lakelurefloweringbridge.com

9. Watch Films From the Area

Dirty Dancing was famously filmed here, including most of the dance scenes and the putting area scene with Marge, Daddy, and Baby filmed on the 16th hole at Rumbling Bald. Parts of the movie, The Last of the Mohicans were filmed at Chimney Rock. At night back in your cabin, it's a fun to watch these movies as you recognize the places you have been exploring that day.

10. Eat at Larkin's on the Lake

Boat here, walk here, drive here - just get here! This is one of Larkin's on the Lake's slogans, and I couldn't agree more. The food is great, they have excellent Bloody Marys (my favorite drink), and the scenery is spectacular as it is right on the lake. Walk down to the boat dock after eating and take some pictures or just enjoy the sunset. For a full menu check out their website: larkinsonthelake.com

As you can see, Lake Lure has so much to offer. You can do as much or as little as you want, depending on what type of getaway you are looking for. One thing is for sure, though: you will relax and be charmed by this gorgeous little town in North Carolina.
